Glossary

Home theatre which is commonly called the home cinema is a set up which provides the exact effect as that of a theater. Generally the home theatre system comes with a DVD player in order provide dolby digital sound for the movie in the DVD and CD given for playing. These Home theatre systems generally come with five speakers which is called 5.1 channel audio speaker systems. Many companies manufacture the home theater systems such as Philips, Samsung, and Panasonic etc. These home theater systems are available in a number of designs and each one has specific looks.

The list of glossary items included with the home theater systems are,

Acoustic Suspension:

Acoustic suspension can be defined as the speaker which is sealed and uses the air trapped in the cabinet as a spring to control the motion of the woofer.

Amplifier:

The amplifier in the home theater systems helps to increase or decrease the gain level of the audio signal.

Boost:

Boost makes a low voice to get louder and much audible. This mass boost is available in all the home theater systems.

Bi-Wiring:

Bi-wiring involves connecting an amplifier or receiver to a speaker where there will be separate wires running between the amp and the woofer and also between the amp and the tweeter.

Channel:

Channels in the home theater systems represent a separate signal path for each input and output. For example, a four channel amplifier has four separate inputs and outputs.

Diaphragm:

The diaphragm has the shape of the cone or a dome. This is a part which is attached to the dynamic loudspeaker that is attached to the voice coil which produces the sound.

Dolby Digital:

Dolby digital which is otherwise called as the AC 3 encoding which digitally compresses up to 5.1 discrete channel of audio. As many of the home theater systems comes with a 5.1 channel this encoding will be helpful in the compression to suit the audio.

Dynamic Range Control:

This facility is available in the home theater system in order to reduce the dynamic range of the audio content. This allows the entire audio to be audible in the adverse conditions.

Equalizer:

The equalizer available in the home theater systems alters the frequency balance of the audio signal. They maybe parametric, graphic or combination of the both.

Efficiency Rating:

The efficiency rating provided to the home theater system is based on the level of sound output measures at a prescribed distance. The optimal efficiency rating will be 1 Watt at 1 meter over a specified frequency.

Firewire:

This is officially called IEEE 1394 which is a high speed data transfer interface used on home theater systems

Interconnects:

Interconnects involves any cable running between the A/V equipment. For example, the wires connecting the woofers and other speakers.

IRD:

IRD is the integrated decoder or receiver which is a unit that helps in decoding the encoded audio or video.

Integrated Amplifier:

Integrated amplifier in the home theater system consists of both the preamplifier and power amplifier.

LCD:

The liquid crystal display is present in the home theater system which is used to display the volume at which the system is kept and the equalizer maintained in it.

LNB:

LNB is the Low Noise Blocker which helps in eliminating the low noise and hissing sound in the video.

Midbass:

Midbass is the middle part of the bass frequency which lies between 50 to 100 Hz.

Noise Shaping:

Noise shaping involves adding dither noise to the audio signal in the digital format, so that it is biased towards the high frequency range. This allows the noise to be lower in the frequency range that the ear is most sensitive.

Octave:

Octave is the range of frequencies which is of some repetitive wave. In the octave the highest frequency is twice the lowest frequency.

Passive Loudspeaker:

Passive loudspeaker is a loud speaker without built in amplification for all the drivers in it. Most of the loud speakers are passive.

Passive Subwoofer:

Passive subwoofer can be defined as the subwoofer without a built in amplification. Most of the subwoofers are active rather than the passive.

Piezo:

It is a speaker driver which creates sound when the quartz crystal receives electrical energy.

Preamplifier:

The pre amplifier is a switching component that includes equalization functions. It is also a control component which comes in a signal chain before the amplifiers.

Power Output:

Power output is measured in Watts. It shows how much energy is modulated by the component.

Processors:

Processors in the home theater systems are those which perform the processing of the incoming signal in some way.

Philips:

Philips is a multinational company which manufactures home theater systems and many other electrical appliances. Several brands are available under this single brand.

Re-EQ:

Re-EQ is the abbreviation for the Re-equalization. This feature is present on the THX-certified receivers

Ribbon Speaker:

Ribbon speaker is a loudspeaker that consists of a thin metallic ribbon suspended in the magnetic field. The ribbon performs like a low impedance voice coil electrically and diaphragm mechanically.

Sensitivity:

Sensitivity is the measurement of sound-pressure level over a specified frequency range created by a speaker by 1 watt of power with a microphone placed 1 meter away.

Speakers:

Speakers are those that are used to provide the output for the audio signal more precisely it is the one which converts the electrical energy into acoustical energy. In a 5.1 channel home theater system there are 5 speakers including one woofer.

THX Ultra:

THX ultra is a certification program for amplifiers, speakers and receivers which assures a base level of quality and performance when played in a room that’s greater than 3,000 cubic feet.

Tweeter:

Tweeter is a speaker driver that reproduces high frequencies usually those that are between 5,000 to 10,000 Hz.

Universal Remote:

Generally the home theater systems come with a universal remote that has the ability to control several brand manufacturers’ system.

Woofer:

Every home theater systems are provided with woofer that is designed to reproduce low frequencies.
